Choose The Best Swing Set Accessory

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Welcome back!

There’s one swing set accessory that you can hardly think of as an accessory at all, really, so integral has it become to the very idea of the swing set through its modern history. That structure is the slide, which has accompanied the outdoor swing set through many alterations and new designs. Whether it’s a freestanding structure beside the swings, or is attached directly to the actual frame, a slide seems somehow necessary to the whole concept of a swing set.

Remember those old metal swing sets with the tall slide that sometimes got so hot in the summer sunshine? Or perhaps your playground included one of those spiraling metal slides with a tower that contained a mysterious curving staircase inside. Most adults have very fond memories of their local playground slides, so it’s no wonder that even with all the other changes in swing sets, designers have retained the slide and at most just modified it to make it safer, rather than doing the unthinkable and removing it altogether. Some things are sacrosanct, after all.

One thing that has changed in the design of outdoor swing sets, though, is the very nature of the materials they’re made of. For the most part, metal has been replaced with wood or a strong, colorful plastic or resin. This is true of the slide as much as of any other swing set accessory. Metal slides may not have vanished completely from playgrounds, but it’s very rare these days to find one on a residential set.

Most of the new types of slide have rounded bottoms, as though the slider is descending through the lower half of a tunnel. Gone is the flat sliding surface with a slight rim on the edge that one used to see on a metal swing set. The newer slides are now made of a resin or plastic that alleviates the high temperatures that the old metal ones used to experience. These slides are also designed so that it’s very difficult indeed to fall off of them as the child goes down. However, this swing set accessory, while it’s undergone so many changes, still provides the same exhilarating experience as the originals. No child should be without that, and the newer slides make sure that it still happens, but perhaps a bit more safely than before.

Obama Swing Set And New Inspiration

Monday, February 8th, 2010

When Barack and Michelle Obama installed a swing set for their daughters at the White House, it set the country abuzz, and prompted a lot of people to reconsider what they thought was most important for their families. What the nation saw, watching the footage of the two young girls racing across the south lawn toward this play set, and realizing that the new First Family were trying to give them as normal a life as possible in their new circumstances, said a lot about what could be accomplished if simple family life was kept paramount.

The children’s swing set has been waiting in the wings in recent years, as other forms of entertainment took its place for awhile, most notably television viewing and computer gaming. But it’s always been ready to make its big return when interest grew again. After all, this is a type of play that can be universally enjoyed, by friends and family alike. The swing set is moving into the backyards once again, returning from its sojourn in parks and playgrounds where even play became more formalized and scheduled.

The set installed by the Obamas was made and set up by Rainbow Play Systems of South Dakota. Rainbow swing sets went through a rocky period a few years ago because some major parts that were made in China were prone to breaking; one girl broke her wrist when she fell from a defective set. Greg Foster, owner of Rainbow Play Systems, spoke of the recalls and other problems at the time the White House set was installed, mentioning how all the important parts of a Rainbow swing set are now made in the U.S.A. and inspected here, with only very minor parts still made in China. There have been no more safety issues since.

The wood swing set at the White House doesn’t just have traditional swings, but includes a fort, climbing wall, ropes, and a picnic table. The set was installed within sight of the Oval Office, so the girls’ father can sometimes watch them play as he works. This may be a “backyard set” writ rather large, and yet it embodies the same principles as any swing set in any ordinary yard: healthy play, parental involvement, and the goal of providing a safe, loving family environment.

The Playground Swing Sets

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Parents now watching their children cavort on playground swing sets may shake their heads, recalling what used to be. They’ll undoubtedly remember two rather different types of play areas they grew up with. The kids swing set in the backyard might have been more lightweight and perhaps a bit shaky, while the set in the playground was much sturdier and was comprised of a metal slide, swings and perhaps monkey bars. Now, of course, the two types of structures have grown very similar.

The predominant form in both versions now is the wood swing set. This type of set has been found to be safer in many ways and, if made of the right sort of wood and properly treated, is almost as durable as a metal set. The old wooden planks that once served as swing seats have been replaced either by seats of plastic or resin, or by plastic belts that will hold the weight of the child yet not cause injuries if they fly loose. In fact, many of the components of playground swing sets are now made of plastic like those swing seats, so that now, for example, playground slides will be made of smooth, rounded plastic, doing away with the old metal slides.

The modern playground swing sets, like their residential counterparts, also tend to be more compact. They don’t always feature separate, freestanding structures as they used to, with the swings in one location, the slide in another, the teeter-totter in another, and so on. These newer sets are more modular, many having a small central tower off of which different elements branch. So the frame for the swings might come off one side of the tower, while the slide extends from another side and a climbing wall might lead off from yet a third side. The swing accessories, in both the playground and home sets, can be added or changed as the local needs dictate.

Another feature of playground swing sets now is that there is more of a focus on safety. The wooden sets came into vogue after playground injuries became a concern a couple of decades ago, and the newer sets have tried to address safety in other ways too. Many playground designers place these outdoor swing sets on softer surfaces, like pads made of material from recycled tires, rather than on open ground that gets packed as kids play on it. The merry-go-round with its strong centrifugal force and metal rails that could cause serious injury is generally absent now, and if the teeter-totter still appears, it’s now made of plastic rather than heavy wood. The swing sets at parks and playground have evolved to become safer than they used to be. With all the new materials, colors and accessories, it’s still just as much fun as it ever was; just a great deal safer.

The Many Types of Swing Sets

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

If you’re starting to check out the various swing sets that are available for kids, then the plethora of choices will boggle your mind. There are plastic, metal and wood, as well as combinations and permutations of all of them. You might buy pre-designed kits that you can simply assemble yourself in the yard, or you can look into all the different modules and accessories, to add the one you want. These will allow you to create a custom swing set, either grand or simple, according to your individual taste and budget.

You may have a metal swing set in mind, thinking of the ones you used to see in playgrounds and in the backyards of your youth. There aren’t as many of those around any more, though you can still see them in some playgrounds. A few companies do offer them for residential settings, and with some modular capability, and they are undoubtedly very durable. But you will certainly have to look harder if you’re thinking of exploring swing sets of metal.

A complete plastic swing set may be harder to find in the same variety and numbers as the wooden or metal sets, but several companies do make them, and they come in many bright, cheerful colors. The plastic sets are probably better suited to younger, lighter children, and they don’t have as long a lifespan as the other kinds of sets do. Yet where the plastic excels is when it’s attached either to the metal or wooden swing sets. Most often this occurs when a plastic slide is added on one end. But on the wooden sets particularly, a large number of accessories are available so that you can add colored plastic pieces, such as yellow telescopes, red steering wheels and white blocks, and all sorts of other toys. The combinations are endless.

As you research the catalogs of swing sets and narrow down your options, you’ll undoubtedly encounter the fact that the ones made of wood currently offer the widest range of models and accessories. However, with some care and exploration you can also find sturdy and reliable metal or plastic sets as well. You will certainly discover a residential, kids swing set that will serve all the needs that you and your kids have, for both fun and safety.

Your Very Own Playground Setup

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

If you want to create a virtual playground in your own backyard, now’s your chance. Many companies offer swing sets and more, to help you with your project. Whether you want to order a single swing set kit, or like the idea of accessorizing until you create a masterpiece that will attract every child in your neighborhood, one of the many companies and websites that market swing sets will be able to help fulfill your dream.

Take Play Nation, for example. They deal almost entirely in residential swing sets, some of them almost literally palatial, with multiple wings and passages, slides and climbing walls and all sorts of activities, sometimes taking place on two levels in little forts. But as you peruse Play Nation’s website (www.playnation.com), suddenly you come upon their Breckenridge Playhouse, with real doors and windows, a little porch, and a peaked roof with a couple of gabled windows. Swing sets and more, indeed!

If you rather fancy following in the footsteps of President and Mrs. Obama, then you might also consider a swing set from Rainbow Play Systems (www.rainbowplay.com). Rainbow features swing accessories, more than separate structures, as a way to make your backyard playground more elaborate. So you can add things as simple as a mounted telescope or bubble panel, or go for more complex items like a tic-tac-toe panel or a picnic table. When Rainbow offers “swing sets and more,” they’re not kidding.

Of course, the ultimate website for exploring the world beyond simple swing sets may actually be Swing Sets and More (www.swingsetsandmore.com), where the products of many different companies are brought together in one place. Here again you’ll find a multitude of play houses, from very simple one-room huts to an elaborate two-story Victorian mansion. Click on a new page and there are trampolines, while still another web page brings you to pool slides and water teeter totters. And of course the main attraction remains the vast array of outdoor swing sets. When you go looking for a swing set to put in the yard for your kids, with everything that’s available you could just find yourself setting up an elaborate playground not just for your own kids, but for the entire neighborhood.
